Alicedale is a very small town 90 km from Port Elizabeth which owes its existence to the development of the railways in the early 1800’s. Nested in surrounding hills, Alicedale is set in a horseshoe of the Bushmans River and was named after Alice Dale (later Alice Slessor), the wife of the engineer in charge of the junction's construction. The once-forgotten town is very small, but growing rapidly, with a population of about 6,000.

From Port Elizabeth [105KM] Get on the N2 Highway to Grahamstown. At the interchange to grahamstown, continue straight on the N10 towards Cradock. 11Km past Paterson turn right at Alicedale sign and follow the road into Alicedale. Upon reaching Alicedale continue straight Bushmansands Hotel, Golf Estate and Spa is signposted on the left. From East London [240KM] Take the N2 towards Port Elizabeth / Grahamstown. Continue on the N2 towards Port Elizabeth, 20Km after grahamstown, turn right on the R72 to Alicedale, Upon reaching Alicedale continue straight Bushmansands Hotel, Golf Estate and Spa is signposted on the right. From Cradock [165KM] Take the N10 towards Port Elizabeth, travel over the olifantskop pass, turn left towards Alicedale approximately 11Km before Paterson.
