The town of Kleinmond lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve which supports over 1600 species of flora known as “fynbos” of which numerous are endemic. The name Kleinmond means “little river mouth”. It lies next to a lagoon at the small mouth – hence the name – of the Bot River, on a narrow strip of land.
The Elephant Rock Guesthouse is located in the picturesque seaside village of Kleinmond at the foot of the Kogelberg mountains. It has six spacious and comfortable rooms, all with en suite bathrooms.
On arrival, guests are led into the elegant lounge and dining room. With its beautiful paintings and chandelier, this part of the house has a wonderful ambience. The rich wooden floors also add to its opulent atmosphere.
Each of our comfortable rooms leads onto a beautiful, safe and secure courtyard. Adjacent to the courtyard is a splash pool.
There is also a lovely covered patio with a big fireplace which is perfect for enjoying a traditional South African barbeque.
Every room is decorated with lovely antique furniture, but also boast modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi internet access, a television, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryer.
The Elephant Rock Guesthouse is named after the wellknown rock formation just outside of Kleinmond, which depicts a profile of an elephant.
It’s other claim to fame is that this historic building was once the old police station of Kleinmond. The “guests” of a decade ago were prisoners who were locked in to stay on the premises! Today’s guests, however, will not recognise the cells when they enjoy the comfort and beauty of these rooms.
Nestling at the foot of the Kogelberg Mountain Range, Kleinmond borders on the KOGELBERG BIOSPHERE RESERVE which is home to 1600 species of indigenous plants. The reserve was recently declared a World Heritage Area. The picturesque town of Kleinmond also forms part of the Overberg Whale Coast, which includes places like Hermanus and Gansbaai to the East. Kleinmond (meaning : "Little river mouth"), is a picturesque seaside village situated at the foot of the Kogelberg mountains. For the more energetic, there are tennis courts and bowling greens in Kleinmond, where visitors are welcome. Horse riding is available at the Arabella Equestrian Centre and for those who prefer a leisurely cycle ride, a rentabicycle facility is available just outside the town.
The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve has great outdoor venues and offers a variety of adventurous activities such as tubing and white water rafting on the Palmiet River. Nearby hiking trails abound with spectacular views of the mountains as well as the rocky coastline.
With activities suited to all skill levels, a wonderful fun day out is on offer in the Reserve. A visit to the Harold Porter Wild Flower Reserve is highly recommended for nature enthusiasts!
Additional activities to be enjoyed include excellent birding, wine tours, fishing and moon gazing. Kleinmond's herd of wild horses is also a special attraction. Just 5 Minutes away, in Betty's Bay, you will find the penquin Colony , home to one of only 3 land-based breeding colonies of the endangered African Penguin. It is well worth a visit.
Kleinmond is a golfers paradise. Not only does the village have it's own 9-hole course, but the award winning Arabella Golf Club is a mere 10 kilometers away and the Hermanus Golf Club is also within easy reach (31 kilometers away).
Kleinmond is approximately an hour and 20 minutes' sceninc drive from the city of Cape Town and an hour from Cape Town International Airport and the Stellenbosch wine route. It is also only 20 minutes from Hermanus and the lovely Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and wine route.
