AREA INFORMATION
Situated on a coastal strip between majestic mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Hermanus boasts the world's finest land-based whale viewing, lush golf courses, pristine beaches and unparalleled natural beauty. Myriad art galleries, excellent shopping, rustic craft markets and a wide variety of restaurants make Hermanus the perfect holiday destination, offering something for everyone. Southern Right Whales come to mate and calve between July and November each year. Whales can be sighted from the spectacular cliff paths running the length of the coastline, or from any one of the several beautiful beaches. Boat-based whale watching excursions give an even closer look, and for a birds-eye view of these gentle giants, take flight in a small plane or helicopter. But whales are but one of the town's many attractions. Hermanus is an active fishing harbour where diving, boating and cruising can be enjoyed all year round. Nature lovers will find an unspoilt mountain paradise in the hiking trails, mountain bike tracks and picnic spots of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a showcase of the Cape's endemic floral kingdom, the fynbos. The main harbourFor adventure seekers there is paragliding, sea kayaking, sandboarding, quad biking, horse riding and a host of other activities. Shuttles leave Hermanus daily for the nearby town of Gansbaai where you can view great white sharks from boats or underwater cages. Hermanus is a golfer's delight. The Hermanus Golf Club is situated close to the town centre. A few kilometers outside town is the world class Arabella golf course, and the neighbouring towns of Kleinmond and Kleinbaai each boast their own distinctive links. Many of South Africa's most renowned attractions are just a short drive from Hermanus. The vineyards of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley extend from Hermanus towards the historic border town of Caledon, an area that produces some of South Africa's finest wines, olive oils and cheeses. A view from the surrounding hillsThere is also Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet; the Bredasdorp shipwreck museum; the prehistoric caves at De Kelders; the penguin colony and wild horses of Kleinmond; the mineral springs in Caledon; the Elgin Valley orchards and gardens, plus a host of museums, quaint villages, nature reserves and much more... all to be found in a landscape of oceans, mountains, rolling hills, rivers and magical blue skies.
