Kwa Mmatau Wildlife Reserve Description
The Bush House Shaded by the branches of a beautiful old Wild Olive tree, the Bush House is located on the edge of the western savannah boundary. The Ngwaritse River runs just below it. The luxury, serviced, self- catering 3 Star Bush House can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests in considerable comfort. Apart from a huge kitchen and living area, it is furnished with double and twin beds, electric fans in summer and heaters and a log fire in winter. Two en suite bathrooms with a shower and toilet, and a third bathroom with a shower, bath and separate toilet complete the picture. All rooms are fully stocked with linens and towels and the Bush House is fully serviced twice daily. The outdoor patio of the Bush House overlooks a dam which occasionally holds water where a variety of birds gather during the cooler hours at dawn and dusk. A large reed-covered boma ideal for evening braais (BBQ), is a favourite place to sit by the fire and recount the day's activities while roasting marshmallows, counting stars or listening to the sounds of the night. The view from the Bush House at sunset is hard to beat. As a guest of Kwa Mmatau you will find it easy to become part of our "bush family" and are invited to join us on our daily rounds and take part in conservation in action. All indoor areas are a no smoking zone.Guests are welcome to smoke outside but need to be acutely aware of the potential fire hazard this may pose especially in late winter.
AREA INFORMATION
The Swimming Pool The swimming pool is a short walk from The Bush House where an awe-inspiring view of the plains is on show. Guests might be lucky to spot the ever present Kudu, Red Hartebeest, Wildebeest and Zebra. While sightings of Black Backed Jackal and our resident warthogs Willie and Willemena and their babies is a special event at sundown. Your Game Drive will include an educational tour of the reserve as well as an insight into our daily routine of conserving our environment. This drive can be taken early morning or late afternoon with a guaranteed sunset on order. Birding The southern slopes of the Magliesberg are a birder's paradise and Kwa Mmatau's varied habitats; mountain, riverine and savannah, attract a large variety of birdlife. The Ngwaritse River and the other riverine areas, as well as the variety of trees lining its banks, provide a rich habitat for many species. We hope to get guests to add to our list of positively identified birds. Already large numbers have been recorded and these increase weekly, especially with the help of keen birdwatching guests, who delight in adding more species to our list during their stay. Kwa Mmatau will soon be listed as an official Birdlife South Africa "Birder Friendly Establishment" as well as a member of the Rustenburg Birding Route. At Kwa Mmatau, birders can enjoy their hobby in a variety of ways and at varying levels of physical exertion. Game Viewing Drives Game Viewing Drives can be taken every morning and/or afternoon. Night drives are arranged on request. Our guests should not expect to see large herds of game as popularised on television. We are in the bushveld, not the wide plains of the Serengeti, so the animals live in smaller groups and are not as easy to spot from a distance. We have a wide range of species in very healthy populations. If you are lucky you may even sight the more elusive hartebeest, gemsbok or kudu. There have also been infrequent sightings of leopards. Trails We are lucky enough to be able to explore the reserve on foot, and our walks through the different habitats found here are tailored to your interests and level of fitness. A gentle walk along the river offers the chance to encounter species not found in the drier parts of the Reserve, and the view from the top of Korwe Hills is not to be missed. Sunrise at Thabaneng Dam is a favourite stopover during one of the walks. Courses & Lectures For the more enquiring minds we offer various courses such as Mike Perry's Snake Identification and Handling Course and/or Jonathan Leemings Scorpion & Spiders Courses, a minimum of 10 guest’s are required for each course. Night Game Drives On request we can arrange a night time drive with a spotlight allowing guests to go in search of some of the less frequently seen nocturnal species on the Reserve. Fiery-necked nightjars, scrub hares and various antelope can be almost guaranteed, but there is the exciting possibility of striking it lucky with a sighting of a brown hyena, porcupine, aardvark or even a leopard. Bush Braai’s (BBQ) A number of areas in the Reserve have been earmarked for this activity and will be pointed out to guests on request. Booking is essential so that we can be in a position to monitor any potential fire hazard. Hide We are in the process of identifying locations for the construction of a number of hides situated around the Reserve. These will offer the unbeatable opportunity to observe a broad range of bird and mammal species undisturbed in their own environment. Watching the comings and goings at a waterhole is a fascinating and enlightening way of learning about the complex interactions in the bush. Game Ranch Management Managing a Wildlife Reserve can be a daunting yet rewarding task. Enrich your bush experience by joining us behind the scenes where you will encounter first hand what goes into managing a Wildlife Reserve and ensuring the well-being of our fauna and flora. This is a unique opportunity to see a side of Africa normally hidden from view for most travellers. Bush Rehabilitation Monitoring Our on-going work on rehabilitating the vegetation of the reserve requires close monitoring of what is being done and the effect it has. A variety of techniques are used to this end and we offer our guests the chance to see how we measure and analyse our progress in practice.
