This is Pula House, the stunning century-old Victorian Karoo guesthouse in the Free State province, personally run by the owners, with an enviable reputation for quality of service, accommodation and friendliness.
Pula House stands in the very heart of South Africa off the beaten tourist track yet close to the main N1 Johannesburg to Cape Town route and right on the scenic N6 to the Sunshine Coast of the Eastern Cape . The countryside en route is a pleasure to travel through and the guest house an even greater pleasure to arrive at.
The perfect overnight stop, Pula House is also a base from which to explore splendid mountains, the Gariep Lake (South Africa's largest inland water), local game reserves and ancient rock art. Guests participate in a host of local outdoor activities, including walking, bird watching, golf, horse riding, tennis and bowls.

Pula House Directions
From Johannesburg (approx. 530kms) 5 hours.
Take the N1 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town. On the Bloemfontein by-pass (approximately 3½ hours from Johannesburg) take Exit 177 onto the N6 holiday route. About 135kms later as the N6 enters Smithfield turn left into Douglas St. at the Pula House sign.
From Cape Town (approx. 930kms) apx. 9 hours. On the N1 northwards towards Johannesburg, pass Colesberg and approximately 35kms later cross the Orange River and take the next exit, No 8, onto the R701 sign posted Bethulie. Follow the signs to Bethulie (approximately 48kms) and then to Smithfield and Pula House (about 65kms later).
From Durban (apx. 600kms - 7 hours) &
Drakensburg Park (apx 550kms - 6 hours)
Do yourselves a favour and leave the N3 after Estcourt and take the R74 via Winterton and Bergville and then the R712 through the Golden Gate National Park to Clarens - it's beautiful. The R711 joins the R26 to Rouxville, with the mountains of Lesotho accompanying you most of the way.
From Eastern Cape Directly up the N6 from East London. (approx. 4½ hours)
OR From Port Elizabeth via the N10 to Cradock and then on the R390 via Venterstad to join the R701 at Bethulie and then into Smithfield (approx. 6 hours)
OR From George via the N10 to Middelburg then on the R56 to Steynsburg and the R390 to the R701 at Bethulie and into Smithfield. (7½ hours)
