Riverhouse-Velddrif Description
The River House is a luxuriously-fitted home, built in what's become quite typical 'West Coast'. With three bedrooms, one of them ensuite, it can sleep six in comfort. Never detracting from its setting, the general feel and decor befits a barefoot Huck Finn holiday by the river.
Apart from simple, unluttered bedrooms with decent linen and mattresses, the many nice features you can expect include, both an indoor and outside braai (for that barbel the wife haggled for, while you and the kids took a paddle up the river), lots of fresh lime-washed furniture, cement screed floors, exposed white timber beams, cement-textured walls, a sunny loft area for time-out, gleaming silver kitchen appliances, (including a gas hob), and plenty of happy sunlight. Unzipping the shutters, the living area spills onto a covered stoep and the Berg River itself.
Just off the River House's veranda, you'll find the Laaiplek slipway, where locals launch their fishing boats and often return from sea with hulls filled to brim with the day's catch.
AREA INFORMATION
Velddrif lies at the mouth of the Berg River and offers the perfect spot for a holiday – be it just a weekend’s recharging of the batteries, or a longer stay to enjoy what the town and surrounding area has in store for the visitor.
A birdlover’s paradise, from the flamingos feeding in the river estuary to the pelicans sunning themselves on islands. Drive along the famous Bokkomlaan, and see how the fish are literally hung out to dry!
The Rocher Pans is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary just north of the town. In the cooler months of the year it is a haven for the greater flamingos. Home to the red-knobbed coot and fluffy bishop birds, one can spend hours in either of the two hides, just soaking up the peace and quiet – a flask and binoculars is all you need.
Laaiplek, the fishing port adjacent to Velddrif, is so named because it was the loading area for ships from Europe – where goods were than transported into the hinterland.
Port Owen, a marina complex developed in the eighties, lies between Velddrif and Laaiplek, has a luxurious air to it. It boasts a yacht club and excellent restaurants and confirms the view that the river and sea are a mecca for sailing folk.
All yachts/fishing boats has to pass Riverhouse on their way to the ocean!
