The Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana is a strange wilderness comprised mostly of salt pans. The pans lie south east of the Okavango Delta and are surrounded by the Kalahari Desert. The delicate ecosystem that is exists in this part of the world is what attracts visitors to the area. The surreal eeriness of the area will inspire and amaze discerning visitors.

The Makgadikgadi Pans wilderness is protected by the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and is comprised of the pans and surrounding grasslands that eventually become savannah. The dry region is transformed after rains the area is frequented by Wildebeest and one of the biggest herds of Plains Zebra, all coming to enjoy the water.

The Makgadikgadi Pans is also known for the occurring Baobab trees that grow in the area. These enormous trees are an intimidating sight. The can grow up to 30 meters and have diameters at the trunk of 11 meters. The trees’ unmistakable silhouette is an interesting addition to the barren landscape.

There are numerous safari lodges in the Makgadikgadi pans area that are all top notch. These will provide a wonderful stay in the wilderness and a good base to do your exploration from.
