North - Western Region Travel Guide

Home, North - Western Region Travel Guide

The North Western Region of Namibia is one of the true last remaining wildernesses in the world. The region includes the Skeleton Coast National Park as well as the Kaokoland. The region is a barren landscape where the treacherous coastline has wrecked dozens of ships in the past. The remains witch can still be seen adds to the haunted feeling the coastal fog brings in.

The skeleton coast’s Southern parts are accessible by means of a 4X4 but the Northern parts can only be reached by flying into the area. The area makes up roughly the northern third of the Namibian coastline. This is one of the least visited and inhospitable area on the face of the earth. Annual rainfall doesn’t exceed 10mm and the plants get their moisture from the coastal fog.

The Kaokoland is another gem on the Namibian landscape. Located in the Kunene region the area is home to the Himba people. The Himba’s are the indigenous peoples of Northern Namibia, along with the Herero. The Himba women cover themselves with a reddish substance, possibly to protect themselves from the sun. The region border shares a border with Angola to the north.

The Kunene region is where you’ll find the Epupa falls on the Kunene River. The falls are a nice addition to the region and are quite popular with tourists and 4x4 enthusiasts that explore the region. The Northern part of Namibia and especially the North Western region has many interesting things to see and do and if you’re willing to make the trek will be rewarded greatly.
