Livingstone Travel Guide

Home, Livingstone Travel Guide

Livingstone, lined with classic Victorian tin roofed houses, a typical example of its colonial architecture is the capital of the Southern Province of Zambia. Named after Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, it is located only about 10km north of the thundering Mosi-oa-Tunya, the name given to the Victoria Falls by its people.

Livingstone accommodation offers easy access to the famous Victoria Falls which boasts the largest sheet of falling water in the world. The spray from the water rises to a huge height of over 400 metres, and is visible from up to 50 km away and is therefore referred to as ‘the smoke that thunders’. The Falls can be explored either by foot or on scenic flights in helicopters, microlights and fixed wing aircraft, always proving to bestow breathtaking photographs.

The Devils Swimming Pool, a naturally formed pool, near the edge of the falls is famous for the wild at heart, where one can swim as close as possible to the edge of the famous Falls despite its current. This always provides for a great story to tell back home – not one that many people have heard.
The National Parks offer Game Drives and Bird watching presenting the most diverse and rewarding sightings. Sunset river cruises, sports fishing and kayaking can all be enjoyed on the mighty Zambezi River, the fourth largest river in Africa.

The Livingstone Museum being the oldest museum in Zambia is definitely worth a visit. It contains a magnificent collection of memorabilia relating to David Livingstone as well as many other interesting artifacts.
Livingstone accommodation is the easiest way to a variety of adrenaline adventure activities ranging from the legendary white water rafting and the falls gorges to bungi jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge.

For Knickknacks and souvenirs to take back home, the Mukuni Craft Village is paradise.  A Nyaminyami which is known to be the Zambezi River God is a dragon like creature with a snakes body and the head of a fish. People believe that it controls the life in and on the Zambezi and is sure to keep your memories of this beautiful town alive.
