Kafue National Park is the second largest National Park in Africa, and the biggest and oldest in Zambia. The 22 400 square kilometer park is known for having wonderful bird viewing opportunities with about 490 different species. This also includes water birds that come to the flooded plains after rains. Despite its close proximity to Lusaka and the Copperbelt, the park has remained largely undeveloped until recent years.
The best way into the park is by flying in, in a light aircraft, and there are numerous airstrips in the park. The alternative of going in on a 4X4 with a GPS is also possible and would be a better experience to experience real Africa. The park can be reached from all four sides of the country. The Kafue National Park has many varying habitats; witch includes the Zambian flooded grasslands and the Busanga plains, witch is a true wilderness, untouched by human development. These areas are popular for game viewing opportunities as well as for Birdwatching. The majority of the park is savannah grasslands with Miombo trees. The park is also home to Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest.
The park is named after the Kafue River that flows through the park and also present is the Lunga and Lufupa rivers. The park is noted for its real Africa vibe and there are huge herds of antelope and present. There are also predators that keep the park’s population in balanced.
