After hundreds of Huguenots fled their homeland in 1685, they arrived by ship at the Cape of Good Hope and settled in a valley nestled between tall mountains and amidst the heart of the magnificent Cape Winelands. This then became known as Franschhoek (French Corner).
Today this valley offers breathtaking scenery, world class cuisine, more than 300 year old vineyards, warm hospitality and the finest wines ever grown, all centered around friendly and welcoming people.
Only 45 minutes from Cape Town, Franschoek accommodation presents a wide spectrum for visitors, ranging from crafts, world class art and a wonderful collection of antique galleries to coffee shops and delectable restaurants which make Franschhoek known as the gourmet capital of South Africa.
The Cape Dutch Homesteads and their luscious award winning wine farms still bear their original French names. Franschhoek accommodation offers various wine cellars for those in search of local wine perfection, eight of South Africa’s “Top 100” restaurants and the chance to linger a while and enjoy the ambience this quaint village and its scenic vineyards have to offer.
For the energetic, locally trained guides will help you explore the region on walking trails in the surrounding mountains, cycling as well as horse-riding. There are numerous trout fishing spots in the streams and dams on the surrounding farms. As well as paragliding over the perfect view of the village.
In July, the village celebrates its French heritage with a wine and gourmet fair, a French Film Festival, Pêtanque and the Barrel Rolling competition at its Bastille Festival. It is also the only weekend of the year that you can get away with wearing a beret.
The first day of spring is honored. It’s a celebration of life and is known as Franschhoek uncorked, where wineries showcase their new releases and the people throw a town wide party.
In summer visit Franschhoeks most spectacular gardens which have recently been filmed by BBC ‘around the world in 80 gardens’.
In December, South African and French Champagne flow for an entire weekend at the annual Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival. Spend the weekend sipping bubbly and snacking on delicacies.
Be part of the magnificent buzz, Franschhoek has to offer.
