Although still referred to as a village, Maun translated to the place of short reeds is the fifth largest town and the "tourism capital" of Botswana. This town is a mix of modern buildings and round thatched huts strewn along the wide banks of the Thamalakane River, just one of the many rivers that make up the mighty Okavango Delta, the largest inland Delta of the world. Red lechwe, warthog and Zebra can still be seen grazing next to local donkeys, goats and cattle.
Always known as the ‘Wild West’ town, Maun has developed hugely due to the growth of its tourism industry, losing much of its old town character and is now a bustling metropolis hosting people from every corner of the world. It is home to over 45,000 people.
Maun accommodation, offers the gateway to the unforgettable Okavango Delta. Just a short flight in a light aircraft and the ground disappears into a snaking labyrinth of rivers and lagoons, lush green bushes, unsurpassed wildlife, over 400 species of birds and pure serendipity. Fishing, bird watching, game viewing, photography or simple relaxation; indulging in any of these in the Okavango is an unforgettable experience to refresh every soul.
Back in Maun, the Nhabe Museum, situated in a building built by the British, covers the natural and cultural history of the Okavango area.
Nile crocodiles can be viewed on a tour at Sitatungas crocodile farm, just 12km south of Maun. Along with a volley ball field, inviting pool and lively bar for jittery spectators, this is a perfect afternoon spent.
The Maun Game Reserve covers a small area of woodland and can be explored on walking trails while viewing numerous birds and buck and enjoying a riverside picnic.
Maun accommodation offers many rustic, well positioned lodges and camps overlooking the Thamalakane River, with sparkling swimming pools, great food comprised of local and western dishes, water skiing, boat trips, cold drinks and the unforgettable call of the Fish Eagle. With their sheer beauty these lodges also prove to be popular hangouts for Maun’s residents, whom are always found to be exceptionally friendly and eager to share stories over the majestic sunset that turns this endless sky from gold to crimson.
With sunshine everyday of the year, the summer never ends here.
