More common sightings include large herds of elephant, hippopotamus and crocodile, amongst many others, but especially lions. South Luangwa has indigenous species that belong to and can only be seen here: the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson’s wildebeest – two wildlife species that should not be missed when visiting the National Park. The concentration of wildlife in the park, specifically around the Luangwa River and its lagoons are considered to be amongst the top-rated sightings in Africa. The river is also the most intact major river systems in the continent and keeps the park intact itself.
