Kakamas is a small town situated in the Northern Cape.
The town was originally built by a church and named after a traditional Khoi word meaning poor pasture. Today the small town quite the opposite, with lush vineyards, large cotton fields and situated in a fertile valley in the lower Orange River.
In the late 18th century, farmers built many irrigation systems which are still used to this day to supply water to many surrounding towns.
