Maclear is a small quaint town situated near Mooi River, at the Tributary of the Tsitsa River in the Eastern Cape

It is situated 10 kilometers from East London and was established as a military camp in 1876 and was named after Sir Thomas Maclear, a famous astronomer who laid the foundation for the Cape Colony. Having such colonial attributes, the town is home to several Victorian and Cape Dutch buildings that add to the quaint charm of the town.

A small town as it is, Maclear is an ideal town to visit if to a looking to go on a quick weekend getaway. It is popular for its fantastic opportunities for trout fishing, San Rock Art and the famous dinosaur footprints. Hiking is also a much enjoyed activity as the town is situated at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain range. Other great places to visit include the Tsitsa Waterfall where abseiling, white-water rafting and canoeing can be enjoyed. The Tractor Museum, Naudes Nek and the Sivewright Bridge are fantastic places to spend a day.
