EXPLORE Swellendam

Swellendam is located on the well-travelled Garden Route and is renowned for its youngberries, architecture and classic cars.

The infamous Garden Route holds within its grasp many hidden gems such as the town of Swellendam; the third oldest formal settlement after Cape Town and Stellenbosch, in South Africa and the Western Cape. Resting at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, accommodation in Swellendam proves there is something for everyone.

Situated half way between Cape Town and George, Swellendam is a town famous for its youngberries, architecture, history and its classic cars. Named after the governor of the Cape and his wife, Hendrik Swellengrebel and Helena Ten Damme, the town served as the last outpost of civilisation on the eastern frontier. Many artisans and traders settled here whose services were indispensable to travellers and explorers as a result. Located along a well-travelled route, Swellendam’s history prevails as a useful refreshment station and stop-over along the coast, providing a variety accommodation to suit every traveller’s needs.

Accommodation in Swellendam includes one hotel with walls of stories to tell, many guest houses, b&b’s and self-catering accommodation that promise tranquillity at its best. For those seeking more than just relaxation, Swellendam is home to wine, liqueur, fruit and dairy farms that promise a pungent mixture of tastes and smells to excite your senses. The adventurous folk have plenty of hiking trails, Nature Reserves and many excursions that can take place along the Breede River.

This picturesque town that preserves its history offers more than just hospitable accommodation, refreshments and exciting excursions. The many buildings and monuments have been coined as “Swellendam Treasures” by The Tourism Bureau. They date back to the 1700’s during colonial times with many National Monuments surrounding the town and the Drostdy Museum that has an amazing collection of late 18th and 19th Century Cape furniture. Don’t forget the classic cars that are on display and available to rent as you leave the town.

The beauty of Swellendam’s surrounding itself is enough to find a reason to take a break from the city life or the long journey along the N2.

What a beautiful Lodge, excellent service (5 star), location is one of the best in this country. We received outstanding service from a team that exceeded every need we had as a family.
