EXPLORE Bloubergstrand

Situated just outside Cape Town city centre along the Blaauwberg Coast, is the suburb Bloubergstrand. It’s about a 20-minute drive to the city and is a world-renowned water sports destination, specifically for Kitesurfing. The beached Turkish vessel, a unique feature to this coastal suburb, has enhanced the conditions for water sports along the coast, according to locals.

Bloubergstrand directly translates to “blue mountain beach”, indicative of the picture perfect view of Table Mountain in the distance. It is from here where this natural wonder is mostly photographed. With a view of the entire mountain from side to side, flanked by Devil’s Peak to the east and Lions Head to the west, the impressive cliffs and prominent table cloth of clouds that cover the mountain is hard miss.

Besides the spectacular view of Table Mountain, Bloubergstrand attracts large numbers of local and international visitors all year round for both its white sandy beaches and the views of some of Cape Town’s biggest attractions. Robben Island is 6.9km west of Bloubergstrand and is where Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and Nobel Laureate recipient, was imprisoned. Robben Island was used not only as a prison, it has a long history that dates back centuries. Take a ferry out to the island from the V&A Waterfront and learn more about the fascinating Cape.

The City Bowl and Harbour of Cape Town can be seen clearly from Bloubergstrand. It creates something of a natural amphitheatre beneath the sweep of the ever impressive Table Mountain. Cape Town stadium in Green Point is a very prominent feature of the Mother City. Built to be environmentally sustainable using natural light for ambience and to save energy, it accommodates a capacity of 68000.

Big Bay is Bloubergstrand’s main beach and is a surfer’s paradise, hosting several national and international competitions annually. Little Bay, is a family beach perfect for sunbathing, building sandcastles and playing bat-and-ball.

After a fun-filled day on the beach when the hunger starts to kick in, there are a number of restaurants to choose from. Bloubergstrand is considered one of the top places for seafood on the Cape West Coast. Being a big tourist destination, Bloubergstrand accommodation isn’t hard to find with a wide variety, suitable for all travellers alike.

Guest Story: A perfect family beach holiday in Plettenberg Bay

Robberg Beach Lodge

What a beautiful Lodge, excellent service (5 star), location is one of the best in this country. We received outstanding service from a team that exceeded every need we had as a family. The breakfast is outstanding and they catered for my children's needs which included items not on the normal breakfast menu.
