AREA INFORMATION

Watched over by the majestic Matzikamma (Maskam) Mountain Vanrhynsdorp, founded as Trutro (Troe-Troe) in 1751, is the oldest and southern most town in Namaqualand.  The village has a distinct Victorian character and is also home to the larest succulent nursery of its kind in the world.

A mere 3 hours drive ( 300 km) from Cape Town, the town is situated on the N7 / R27 intersection and is the ideal base to explore Namaqualand and the Hantam Karoo. Unique to the region is the convergence of three botanical kingdoms namely Nama-Karoo, Succulents in the Knersvlakte and Cape Fynbos on the mountains. Majestic sandstone rock formations are to be found in the mountains surrounding Vanrhynsdorp along with Koi and Bushmen rock art.
