Swakopmund Travel Guide

Home, Swakopmund Travel Guide

Swakopmund is known as Namibia’s premier seaside town. Surrounded by the desert and the cool Atlantic, the climate is quite temperate. The town, established in 1892, was originally a Port for Colonial German ships traveling from Europe to Africa. The town has therefore a very strong German influence in its architecture and notable buildings include the Altes Gefängnis prison.

Attractions in and around Swakopmund include the National Marine Aquarium, a crystal gallery, dunes and an all grass golf course in the desert. Swakopmund is popular with backpackers and this option is well worth it if you’re on a budget. There are also numerous bars and nightclubs in the town that attract a lot of young people.

Swakopmund is located about 280 kilometers from the Capital Windhoek and makes it Ideal for people in the Central part of the country to go on holiday in the quaint seaside resort. Henties Bay, the fishing capital of the Namibian Coast is about 70 kilometers away and although not as popular as Swakopmund, offers the holidaymaker value for money.
