The Matopos hills have a unique history and are considered to be sacred by some of the local peoples. The roughly 424 square kilometer park includes a 100 square kilometer area within set aside for game. This includes Black and White Rhinoceros, Sable Antelope and Impala.

The establishment of the park was as a bequest for Cecil John Rhodes, and his remains can be found in the park, commemorated with a bronze plaque. The park is made up of mostly granite kopjes and wooded valley’s. The park contains about 1 75 bird, 88 mammal, 39 snake and 16 fish species. The Matopos Hills National Park is a wonderful wilderness and has enough natural charm to make for a great getaway.
