Mooi River is a town situated approximately 160 kilometres from Durban and 64 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg.

The town was originally named after an Irish farmer, Lawrenceville in the 1800s, and was later given the name Mooi River from the Voortrekkers. The small town is well known for its farming and textiles. It forms part of the popular arts and crafts route, the Midlands Meander. There are many activities in and around the town, water sports are popular in the town, such as, boating, canoeing and tubing. The Mooi River falls are located about 25 kilometres outside of the town.
