Coca Cola Park (JHB) World Cup Accommodation
The Coca Cola Park is one of two stadiums in the Johannesburg area that will host matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium, previously known as Ellis Park, famously hosted the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup that the Springboks won. The stadium is home to the Golden Lions Rugby Union as well as Orlando Pirates, one of the biggest teams in the PSL.
The Stadium received an R 500 Million upgrade, and has been ready for the tournament, two years ahead of time. The stadium can now seat 65, 000 people, with an additional tier added. The stadium will host five group matches, a second round match and a quarterfinal. This makes Johannesburg one of the places ‘to be’ during the World Cup as the city plays host to 15 of the 64 matches including two quarterfinals and the final.
The Ellis Park Precinct includes the Johannesburg Stadium (athletics), Standard Bank Arena (tennis) and an Olympic-class swimming pool. The surrounding area, located South East of the CBD is also receiving a facelift with major investments happening and police cracking down on trouble makers. The new 20 metre-wide subway at the Ellis Park Station will help in getting the numbers to and from the stadium.
The Match Days for Coca Cola Park are as follows; Group Matches on the 12th, 15th, 18th, 21st and the 24th of June. The second round match is on the 28th of June and the quarterfinal will be played on the 3rd of July. This is mouth-watering news for Johannesburg football fans. Make sure to book in advance, as the sheer numbers coming to Jozi ought to leave little room for anyone thinking to go.
