Soccer City (JHB) World Cup Accommodation
Soccer City is Soweto is the biggest stadium on the African Continent by the numbers it can squeeze in. Soccer City can accommodate an incredible 94, 700 people with none of them being further than 100 meters from the action. The Stadium is designed to look like a calabash, an African pot. The façade of the building will resemble a pot on the fire when the lights are switched on.
The Flagship stadium of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is located next to the South African Football Association and FIFA’s South African headquarters. The stadium has in the past played host to the final of the 1996 African Cup of Nations. Visually, the Stadiums’ exterior has the most African influence than any of the other stadiums for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The stadium, scheduled to host both the opening and closing ceremonies, will also see a total of eight matches. The Opening match on the 11th of June and final on the 11th of July, group games on the 14th, 17th 20th, 23rd of June, a second round match on the 27th of June and a quarterfinal on the 2nd of July. World Cup Fever will be high in Johannesburg, as the Coca-Cola Park elsewhere in the city will also play host to World Cup games.
The Stadium is located in Soweto, the most famous of South Africa’s townships. This township is definitely worth a visit as its cultural value is immense. It is here where the majority of Johannesburg’s population lives. Taxis, vuvzelas, street vendors and shebeens are all in abundance in the township and would offer the tourist a true South African cultural experience.
Johannesburg soccer fans are extremely passionate and flamboyant and are a colourful bunch to observe. The two biggest clubs in the national league, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, are based out of Soweto and their fans are cant be missed!
Get in with the singing and dancing and support your team in true African style!
