AREA INFORMATION
Paternoster's reserve - Cape Columbine Nature Reserve - covers an area of 263ha along the rocky stretch of coastline with numerous inlets and coves. This area was declared a nature reserve in December 1973. The vegetation of typical West Coast veld ranges from the well-known West Coast fynbos to Succulent Karoo. In spring (August to October) the area is covered in a bright tapestry of wild flowers. This reserve boasts the last manually controlled lighthouse to be built in South Africa. It is usually the first South African lighthouse to be seen by ships coming from Europe. The lighthouse was built in 1936 on Castle Rock. The light stands at a height of 80m above sea level and casts a beam, which is visible for about 50km. The significant white boulders, where great hump-shaped rocks crouch around little rocky bays, make this unspoiled gem one of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast. The vast beach, washed by a fresh Atlantic Ocean can satisfy the enthusiastic kayaker in a safe paddling environment.
The Beach Camp Directions
Drive along the R27 from Cape Town to Velddrif. About 10km before Velddrif, after going over a bridge you will see a big green board to Vredenburg. As you come off the bridge, turn left to Vredenburg. Drive all the way through Vredenburg and carry on with the road into Paternoster. At the stop street, you will see a sign “The Beach Camp”, turn left. You will pass the hotel and the road begins to twist and turn past fisherman cottages. Stay on the road until you get to another stop street - here turn right. The road will turn into a gravel road. There are signs all along the route in Paternoster. When you get to the Cape Columbine nature reserve gate, you can just pass through if its open, otherwise you use the password: I am on my way to The Beach Camp. That would get you through. About 300m after you passed through the gate you will see another “The Beach Camp” sign. Turn to the right here. About 500m further you will see the sign: “Welcome to The Beach Camp”
The Beach Camp Any closer to the water and you will get Twiddle your toes in the sand... The sunset is spectacular! An example of one of the double bed A-Fr Walk in tents under fisherman nets The kitchen/dinning tent.
